Portland, Oregon – October 15, 2026: A Portland police officer f-t-lly shot 36-year-old Eric Jonathan Hurtado after encountering him stabbing a man with a box cutter in downtown Portland. The incident began at approximately 4:34 p.m., when officers were dispatched to reports of an armed assault near Southwest Broadway and Southwest Washington Street.
While responding, officers received additional reports that Hurtado was attempting to stab or cut other people. At approximately 4:39 p.m., Officer Daniel Hall, a 7.5-year veteran assigned to Central Precinct, located Hurtado outside a hotel in the 400 block of Southwest Broadway. As Hall exited his patrol vehicle, he saw Hurtado actively stabbing a bystander and fired his department-issued firearm twice, striking him once.
After falling to the ground, Hurtado continued attempting to stab the victim. Hall moved people away from the immediate area, secured the scene and recovered the box cutter. Officers administered emergency medical aid before Hurtado was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead despite further lifesaving efforts.
Two men were transported to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening stab wounds. One had been attacked inside a business and the other outside the hotel. Police said Hurtado also physically engaged two additional people, neither of whom required hospitalization.
