A man angry over a $2,500 debt crashed a car through a gate at a Citibank campus near Tampa on Nov. 4 and fatally shot an employee before an armed security officer stopped him.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said the attack unfolded shortly after noon at the Sabal Center complex, where more than 3,200 people were working.
Jacob Pearson, 35, of Orlando, exited his vehicle with a rifle and shot Leanne Selman, 41, of Palm Harbor, three times.
When the rifle jammed, he retrieved a handgun from his car and shot her again as she tried to crawl away. Within a minute, Citibank Vice President and Intelligence Lead Analyst John Fraley, 38, a Marine Corps veteran, took a tactical position in a cafeteria restroom, exchanged gunfire with Pearson and struck him five times.
Pearson, who had no prior criminal record and was carrying about 90 rounds, died later at a hospital. Selman, a nine-year employee who worked as a learning advisor in Citi Security and Investigative Services, had no connection to him. Four others suffered non-life-threatening injuries while fleeing. Chronister called Fraley a hero whose actions prevented a larger loss of life.
