A man is dead after police say he threatened to harm himself and others with a steak knife on Tuesday afternoon.
“I heard screaming and open my door,” said William, a neighbor. “And I saw two victims running by here right in front of my door. I looked over and the guy with a knife is over here.”
A Holly Hill police officer shot the suspect, who was “having a violent episode,” just before 5:30 p.m., according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
It happened near Ridgewood Avenue and 5th Street, VSO said, which is assisting in the investigation.
The man was identified as 40-year-old Michael Edminson.
A 911 caller said the man had threatened to kill her in the past and was going to stab a female outside.
Edmison also called police.
“I hear voices,” he told dispatch.
When asked if he had a weapon on him, he said he had a steak knife in his hand.

The suspect’s mom also called police to warn them he was schizophrenic, saying he previously attacked her and law enforcement.
When officers arrived, the VSO said the man broke away from the woman and began running toward the officer, who then fired several shots. VSO said the suspect went down but got back up.
In the body cam video, the officer is heard repeatedly telling Edmison to drop the knife.
More shots were fired, VSO said, and the man eventually died.
