University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security officers responded to an unpermitted event on the Ann Arbor campus

Ann Arbor, Michigan – November 1, 2026: University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security officers responded to an unpermitted event on the Ann Arbor campus just before 5 p.m. and witnessed a university student assault a woman not affiliated with the school, according to a department statement provided to media outlets.
The student, identified in multiple news reports and social media posts as Temulun Togochog, an approximately 18-year-old University of Michigan student, is alleged to have shoved influencer Lizzy Benichou to the ground during a confrontation.
The incident occurred at a tabling setup associated with a Liberty Under Fire USA tour stop that included signs questioning the compatibility of Islam with Western values.
Video footage shows the student first confronting individuals at the table before the interaction with Benichou escalated following a comment about attire in the context of Iran.
Onlookers intervened as the student continued toward Benichou. Officers took the student into custody; footage shows her resisting handcuffing. In the videos, she is heard stating words to the effect that she should have killed Benichou when she had the chance.
Campus police said the student was processed and released pending warrant authorization. No injuries were reported.
Benichou later stated on social media that she had been physically assaulted while exercising free-speech rights, that she was receiving care, and that she was OK. She indicated she intended to press charges. Authorities have not publicly named the student in available official statements, and no charges have been authorized as of the latest reporting. The incident remains under review pending possible warrant authorization.
