NEW YORK, New York – June 10, 2026 – The New York Police Department reported that 56 people were taken into custody and 10 officers were injured after an estimated 10,000 fans gathered outside Madison Square Garden following the New York Knicks’ 107-106 Game 4 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals on Wednesday night.
According to the NYPD, the crowd became increasingly disorderly as the game progressed. Police said fans blocked traffic in Midtown Manhattan, climbed onto vehicles, scaffolding, traffic lights and poles, ignited fireworks in densely packed areas, threw glass bottles, and engaged in physical altercations. Authorities also reported that some individuals attempted to flip a taxi and damaged multiple police vehicles.
The NYPD stated that 15 of the 56 people taken into custody were formally arrested, while 41 others received criminal court summonses and were released. Ten officers sustained injuries during the response. Commissioner Jessica Tisch said one officer was struck in the head with a glass bottle. Police did not immediately provide additional details regarding the extent of the officers’ injuries.
Officials said four NYPD vehicles sustained significant damage, including shattered windshields. The department reported that repeated verbal orders to disperse were ignored by portions of the crowd, leading to additional enforcement actions.
