Two people were killed Tuesday night when a small plane crashed on takeoff from Falcon Field in Mesa, Arizona, authorities said.
Falcon Field is often used as a “reliever,” or overflow, facility for both Phoenix Sky Harbor International and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway airports.
The Mesa Fire & Medical Department said two people were confirmed to have died in the crash of what Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, identified as a single-engine AT-6.
The specific model of the AT-6 wasn’t immediately clear. The name has been used for a variety of small military training and attack planes since the mid-20th century, and World War II-era AT-6s are popular in aeronautics shows.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, authorities said.
